We want to be productive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Because of this, the conversation almost always begins with a variation of the same well-intentioned question: &#8220;How can I help you today?&#8221; or &#8220;What are your financial goals?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These questions come from a good place. They are rooted in a genuine desire to serve and solve problems. But in the world of lifestyle financial planning, we have found that starting here often limits the conversation before it has even begun.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here is why we believe that building a truly secure future requires us to ask better questions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When faced with the question, &#8220;What are your goals?&#8221;, it is completely normal to feel put on the spot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Behavioural finance tells us a fascinating truth about human nature: we are actually quite bad at predicting what will make our future selves happy. So, when asked for a financial goal, we tend to recite the answers we think we are supposed to give.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;I want to retire at 65.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;I want to pay off the mortgage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;I want a million pounds in my pension.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These aren&#8217;t necessarily your deepest personal visions; they are simply the socially acceptable milestones we have all been taught to aim for. If we take these surface-level answers and immediately build a spreadsheet around them, we might succeed in hitting the target, but we risk aiming at the wrong board.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You might reach 65 with a perfectly funded pension, only to realise you don&#8217;t actually want to stop working\u2014you just wanted the freedom to work differently.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To build a plan that actually serves you, we have to pause before we calculate. We have to move past the transactional <i>what<\/i> and explore the emotional <i>why<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This means changing the questions we ask.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Instead of asking what you want your portfolio to yield, a better question is: &#8220;What is your earliest memory of money, and how does it shape your fears today?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Instead of asking when you want to retire, a better question is: &#8220;If your income was completely guaranteed for the rest of your life, what would you do on a Tuesday morning?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These are not always easy questions to answer. They require a bit of vulnerability. But they are the questions that uncover the truth about what you actually value.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The numbers, the tax structures, and the investment portfolios are incredibly important. We will always do that rigorous technical work. But a pension or a trust is simply a tool. And asking for a tool before you know what you are building is a difficult way to construct a life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When we take the time to ask better questions, we gather the context needed to make your capital truly work for you. We stop chasing an arbitrary <b>Return on Investment<\/b>, and start designing a meaningful <b>Return on Life<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The next time you review your financial plan, don&#8217;t just check the balances.
