{"id":515,"date":"2014-03-17T02:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-03-17T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/richideas.co.za\/how-are-the-markets-looking\/"},"modified":"2017-09-21T12:35:09","modified_gmt":"2017-09-21T10:35:09","slug":"how-are-the-markets-looking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/contattolive.co.za\/north\/how-are-the-markets-looking\/","title":{"rendered":"HOW ARE THE MARKETS LOOKING?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fluctuations in the markets are one of their defining characteristics. \u00a0Various factors contribute to the vicissitudes of investor behaviour, both locally and globally, and many of these are psychological factors that are strongly influenced by perceptions \u2013 and an interest rate hike will surely shake the boat.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s always good to know how your investment portfolio is constructed and variety is important to encourage an overall positive return. \u00a0When local markets are up, global markets might be down and vice versa.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here\u2019s a little bit of what\u2019s been happening in the past six weeks.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><i>\u201cLong-term investors should not expect to enjoy this year the spectacular returns they earned last year, but they need not fear the end of the bull market, especially in global equities.\u201d<\/i> So says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iol.co.za\/business\/personal-finance\/lower-your-return-aims-for-2014-1.1643871#.UyYCr62Sxst\" target=\"_blank\">IOL Personal Finance<\/a> writer, <b>Laura du Preez<\/b>, in her article published in early Feb.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The beginning of February 2014 saw an increase in the interest rate as well as some market sell-off, which made some twitchy, but for those who keep their eyes on the long-term goals of their investment portfolios, this is merely part of the journey that ultimately has an upward trend.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Peter Brooke<\/b>, head of <b>Old Mutual<\/b> Investment Group\u2019s MacroSolutions boutique, says that the dips we\u2019re seeing are a result of a general negative sentiment about emerging markets as a whole and the unanticipated interest rate increase combined with the selling off of South African bonds by foreign investors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Offshore equities performed well last year, partly due to the drop in the Rand, but we\u2019re seeing that it\u2019s most likely that these investments will not carry the same kicker returns as 2013.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Looking beyond 2014, <b>Paul Hansen<\/b> of <b>Stanlib<\/b> says that they are expecting a nominal return of between eight and nine percent a year, on average, from equities, and through to the end of this year about five percent each from the bond market and listed property.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite the recent month\u2019s market moves, there are still some elephants in the room that no-one seems to be talking about; elephants that potentially hold some really high return value.
